Introduction
All personnel involved with the conduct of human
subject research must complete training in the protection of human
subjects. The CITI basic course is
used for the initial training. The
completion certificate is valid for three years after which time training
must be refreshed. The refresher
course will be determined based on your original course completion.
Instructions for both the initial and refresher courses are provided below.

Initial Training
The curriculum for your course in the protection of human subjects has
been defined by your institution according to your role in human subject
research. The Basic Course will
require 4-6 hours to complete. You are encouraged to use multiple log on sessions.
From the CITI
Course Enrollment Questions page answer only question 1 by selecting Group 1,
2, 3 or 4 as described below and then click submit. After selecting the learner group you may
need to return to the Main Menu to start the course.
Choosing a Learner Group
Enroll in a Learner
Group appropriate for your role in human subject research.
- Employees involved with biomedical research
should complete Learner Group 1*
- Employees involved with social and behavioral research
should complete Learner Group 2*
- Medical or dental student or resident should
complete Learner Group 3
- IRB members or
staff of the Human Subjects Protection Office should complete Learner
Group 4**
*If
you conduct both biomedical and social /
behavioral research you should complete the requirements for both Learner
Group 1 (Biomedical) and Learner Group 2 (Social /
Behavioral). Enroll in either Group
and complete the course. Then change
to the other Learner Group from the "Change Groups" link on the
Learner Menu and complete the additional required modules.
**If
you are a member of the IRB and you are also an investigator
you may initially enroll in either Learner Group 1 or 2, as applicable
to the type of research that you conduct, and then change to Learner Group 4
to complete the remaining modules.
The
IRB is automatically notified of your completions.
The Optional Modules
The basic course
assignments are based on the common requirements for all research. Investigators and study personnel are
encouraged to complete optional modules on special topics that relate
to their research, e.g. the modules on the inclusion of prisoners in research
or genetic research in human subjects.
The
IRB reserves the right to require completion of additional modules
